Common Core Standard Mathematics
1.NBT. 1. Add within 100, including grouping in tens and ones.   Use one-two digit numbers in addition and subtraction and understand its differences when developing strategies in solving mathematic operations.

1.NBT. 2. Recognize value and proper number place in written one-two digits numbers.  Identify value and order of ones and tens numbers when groping and solving math problems

2.OA.1. Add within 100 including value, grouping and counting of tens.  Use reasoning to add one-two digit numbers and ones and tens mentally without having to relay on finger counting.
Ex.   2   +    5      = 25
       (ten)(one)

2NBT.1 Use strategies to round whole numbers to the nearest ten.  Recognize one-two digit numbers value when solving math problems.  Use methods to mentally add tens numbers and compare results.

Summary: This story is about a group of coyotes that gathered in their desert ranch.  As they started to count how many roadrunners were in the area, they started to get hungry. As one coyote struggled to make the sum of the counted roadrunners on a piece of paper, there was one coyote named Clever Coyote who had the idea to mentally round each number to the nearest ten value, and then, add the numbers by ten.  She considered this was a quicker way to add the numbers in the head and get a close number of the total sum.  Once the written sum was completed, results were compared, and they noticed that rounding the numbers to the nearest ten, gives a very close result to the real one.  The coyotes repeated the activity-counting grasshoppers and lizards, and the same methods of sum were applied and the same conclusion was established.  Rounding numbers to the nearest ten, gives a close number to the real number.

Rating:  ***** I highly recommend this book as it emphasizes different mathematical concepts and strategies to add whole numbers within tens value. The story addresses math-solving problem that students can relate in real life.

Classroom Ideas:
This book could be used for different mathematical concepts, such as: addiction, subtraction, identification and organization of whole numbers within tens and ones value.  Also, it emphasizes, the use rounding numbers to the nearest ten as one mathematic strategy to solve math operations.  Also, students can learn how to use reasoning by adding one-two digits numbers or tens in the head without using fingers and get a quick number estimation.
